Memories of World War Two
The Volunteer Centre secured funding from the Heritage Lottery in June 2005 to run a 12 month project to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two. The project will encourage people living in North Warwickshire to research, celebrate and record the role of volunteers during the War. This includes people who volunteered with the Red Cross, WRVS and as Air Raid Wardens as well as more informal volunteering such as knitting socks for soldiers, digging for victory (turning gardens into allotments) and looking after evacuees. The project is being run in partnership with Millennium Volunteers and Friends of Atherstone Heritage and aims to recruit volunteers from the local community, particularly between the ages of 16 - 25, to record older people's memories from the War. They will be given the chance to work as a team and develop self confidence and skills, such as taking part in research and learning how to record and edit oral histories.
Local secondary schools will be providing advice on how to turn the recordings into a useful learning resource that will be available to students for many years to come.
