Children in North Warwickshire are set to benefit from a new facility.
Hartshill Community Library has refurbished their children’s corner making it bright, colourful and restocked, with all the latest books for all ages by Warwickshire Library Services.
Volunteer Librarian Meg Griffiths says children, including older teenagers, will now be able to enjoy a range of fiction and non-fiction books in comfortable and attractive surroundings, as well as borrow them from the library.
The refurb has come thanks to funding from the parish council.
Meg added “We are really grateful for the money and hope that parents and carers will bring children down to the library and make the most of it. It is really important that youngsters can experience the wonderful world of books and the pleasures of reading.”
The library is based inside the community centre which is next to the church. It also houses the Hartshill Hub where people can use computers and the internet for free. The library and hub rely solely on volunteers. Oliver Birch has been a volunteer for four months. He says “I live locally and was aware of the centre. After graduating from university, I was looking for something to do while looking for a job, so I popped in and found out they needed library volunteers.
Oliver helps out on a rota basis. He helps take delivery of new books, checking books in and out and helping people on the computers. He says “I enjoy volunteering. It has given me the chance to learn some new skills.”
From the 1st of March the hub will be running free computer training in the library offering the Learn My Way modules to people who want to get up to speed with everything on line.
The courses will start on the Tuesday and will run for six weeks 2 – 4pm. There is no need to book, just turn up. The training is really flexible; you can come and go as you please”
There are twelve hubs in North Warwickshire and they are designed to help people do everything online. Most of them have a Freephone which people can use to phone ten useful organisations, including North Warwickshire Borough Council, the Citizens Advice Bureau and Volunteer Centre.
The Hartshill Library is open Tuesday 10 – 2pm, Wednesday and Thursday 2 – 4pm. Friday 10 – 12pm and Saturday 10 – 12pm. You can also use the hub on these days.
